2. Applications:
Toluene is a fundamental organic raw material used to produce various chemical products, including benzene, xylene, benzoic acid, toluene diisocyanate, chlorinated toluenes, cresols, and p-toluenesulfonic acid. Additionally, toluene can be used as a gasoline additive to increase octane rating, and as a solvent for paints, inks, and nitrocellulose. However, due to its toxicity, its use as a solvent has decreased in industrial applications, favoring its role as a chemical raw material.
3. Usage Precautions:
Toluene is low in toxicity but highly flammable. Its vapors can form explosive mixtures with air and ignite upon contact with open flames or high heat. It reacts strongly with oxidizing agents. Rapid flow can generate and accumulate static electricity. Toluene vapor is heavier than air and can spread to distant ignition sources at lower levels, posing a fire hazard.
