Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), also known as 4-methyl-2-pentanone, is a colorless and transparent liquid that is miscible with most organic solvents such as alcohol, benzene, and ether, and is slightly soluble in water. It has an aromatic ketone odor. MIBK is an excellent medium-boiling solvent and extractant. It can be used as a solvent for paints, nitrocellulose, ethyl cellulose, recording tapes, paraffin, and various natural and synthetic resins; as a dewaxing agent in the refining of lubricating oils; as an extractant for rare earth metals, tantalum, and niobium salts; as a raw material for anti-aging agents; and as a pesticide extractant.
