Dimethylacetamide (Dimethylacetamide), with the full name N,N-Dimethylacetamide, has the chemical formula CH3C(O)N(CH3)2 and is abbreviated as DMAC or DMA. It is commonly used as a non-proton polar solvent. It is a colorless, transparent, flammable liquid. It can be mixed with water, alcohols, ethers, esters, benzene, chloroform, and aromatic compounds. It is used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and synthetic resins, and also as a solvent for spinning polyacrylonitrile and as an extractive distillation solvent for separating styrene from C8 fractions. It is produced by the reaction of dimethylamine with acetyl chloride.
